Consumer Protection: More than 5000 notifications in 2016 Topped by foodstuff sector

The report by the D. G. of Studies and Development, PACP, on the statistics indicators for 2016, indicated 5883 notifications in 2016.

 

Consumer Protection head office, Muscat, came first with 1275 notifications, followed by Seeb with 1146 notifications, Governorate of Al Batina North with 1112 notifications, then Dhofar with 549 notifications, Dakhliya with 475 notifications, Sharqiya South received 277 notifications, followed by Al Dhahira with 256 notifications, Al Batina South in Barka received 205 notifications, whereas Sharqiya North received 191 notifications, Al Batina South (Rustaq) received 166 notifications, Bureimi with 157 notifications, Al Wosta received 56 notifications, Musandam (Khasab and Diba) received 17 notifications, and Al Mazyouna received one notification only up to the end of 2016.
The report indicated that the notifications varied between several sectors, headed by the consumable foodstuff sector with 1789 notifications, followed by other goods with 1023 notifications, and third position was for other services with 735 notifications, then restaurants and coffee shops with 567 notifications, saloons and beauty parlor with 374 notifications, garments and textiles with 292 notifications, followed by building and construction with 233 notifications, electricals and electronics with 166 notifications, vehicle workshops with 141 notifications, followed by car dealers with 128 notifications, then vehicle parts with 105 notifications, tires with 76 notifications, phones and telecommunications with 68 notifications, cattle and cattle feed with 51 notifications, furniture and fixtures with 45 notifications, aluminum, metal and carpentry workshops with 41 notifications, followed by jewelry and accessories, manpower recruitment, tour and travel and the last was the kitchen sector.

 No one imagined that greed and deviousness would reach such a staggering level that thought exist only in movies and investigative drama shows , yet it became a stark reality when some merchants sought to make a profit on the account of health and safety of the young and adults alike utilizing the God-given intellect that they posses into destruction and evil instead of serving public good , the devious plan used ( Back to school ) season by carving holes inside books and hiding chewing tobacco inside in away from the inspectors notice targeting the younger generation with these destructive materials that effect the health , mind and safety of our kids .
 The Judicial officers noticed that consumers come very frequently to a specific shop during one of the inspection tours which raised their suspicions to strengthening the monitoring and follow up on that matter , students were spotted in the shop as well , the Officers expediently intervened to inspect the shop , the inspection did not reveal anything at first , however , the officers noticed a stack of books and decided to inspect it , surprisingly , they found more than 600 pouches of chewing tobacco on its way to be sold and distributed on consumers and students , the officers immediately issued a violation and referred the case to the General Prosecution to deal with the matter as per the Law
